However, I do know that the cs lower-divs have been seeing significant cases of cheating (in a few areas, not just exams) for many semesters in a row now (I think at one point there was cheating in one or more cs lower divs every semester for like 4-5 semesters straight). How are you people even seeing this? Wandering eyes from the rest of you too? I personally haven't ever seen cheating on an exam (although I suspect the phone-in-bathroom cheating is common) because I'm busy keeping my eyes on my own work. This reminds me of how on yikyak the other day, I read that a girl actually brought two phones with her to the exam: one to hand to the proctor when she went to go to the bathroom, and one to actually use in the bathroom. Sometimes it's best to just treat it like all the other bullshit in Berkeley and tune it out. Like when the guy sitting a row in front of you has notes written in the back of his blue book or is peeking at his phone, you're demoralized knowing that if you two studied the same amount, he's probably going to do better than you. The worst part is that it's actually incredibly tilting to see someone cheat while you're taking an exam. In the short term, you can't deny those kinds of ramifications. When a final worth 30% of your grade consists of just four questions, the extra notes you took can save you on a question you would have blanked on, literally taking you from a B+ to an A. And they don't need to do it on every exam, just the ones they know will provide the most benefit and the ones which minimize the risk of getting caught. Plenty of them are not just trying to reach the average, they're trying to go from one standard deviation above average to two standard deviations above average. People are smart enough to cheat discretely and maximize the utility of it. In the long run, that may be true in general, but it's confirmation bias to assume each person who cheats is a customary cheater or is desperate to just pass. I don't hold such an optimistic view of "cheaters never prosper". That and the stigma and uncertainty surrounding cheating accusations ends up preventing cheaters from getting called out. The next was probably how helpless and unequipped the faculty and administration were in preventing it.īut yeah, it's hard for even the best proctors to catch good cheaters with such high student to instructor ratios. I remember the prevalence of cheating being one of my first tastes of disillusionment with Berkeley. R/berkeley is not endorsed by or affiliated with UC Berkeley GO BEARS!
